Details :
The building is a multi-purpose community facility incorporating a library, minor treatment centre, adult education centre, a gym, and a cafe. The design brief was that the building's energy efficiency should exceed minimum building regulations and should utilise sustainable technology. This is where PowerGlaz came into play in as far as the double glazed bespoke modules not only provided a low u-value but the photovoltaic cells were arranged in the modules to reduce solar heat gain – all this was as well as generating clean electricity and illustrates the multi-functional qualities of PowerGlaz.
The overall effect of the installation was very pleasing aesthetically from the outside but inside the building the shading effect of the PV cells creates a pleasing 'dappled' sunlight.
The centre is a key building within a new village in the heart of the deprived inner-city area of Preston Road, Hull. To demonstrate the sustainable characteristics of the building a permanent display demonstrates to the public the instantaneous power generation of the PowerGlaz arrays, along with the kWh of electricity produced to date and the tonnage of CO2 saved compared with electricity generated using conventional fossil burning fuels.
